Have you ever seen a beautiful pot decorated with mango leaves, a coconut and flowers during an Indian festival?

That special pot is called a Kalasha!

A Kalasha is used in many Hindu prayers, festivals and ceremonies. Now you can make your own colourful Kalasha craft while learning about its different parts.

Let’s create one! 🎨

What You’ll Need

  • White paper or cardstock
  • Pencil
  • Crayons or colour pencils
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Glue
  • Green paper, optional
  • Brown paper, optional

Step 1: Draw the Kalasha

Take your paper and draw a large Kalasha.

Start with a round or slightly curved pot with a wide opening at the top.

Don’t worry about making it perfect. Your Kalasha is your own creation!

Step 2: Colour Your Kalasha

Now give your Kalasha some colour!

You could use yellow, gold, orange, red, pink or any colours you like.

Add simple dots, flowers, lines or other patterns to decorate your pot.

Step 3: Add the Mango Leaves

Mango leaves are often placed around the top of a Kalasha.

Draw several simple green leaves or cut them from green paper.

Place them around the opening of your Kalasha and glue them in place.

Step 4: Add the Coconut

A coconut is often placed on top of a Kalasha.

Draw a small coconut on brown paper and cut it out with adult help.

Glue it above the mango leaves.

Your Kalasha is beginning to look complete!

Step 5: Decorate Your Kalasha

Now comes the fun part!

Give your Kalasha your own special design.

You can add:

  • Flowers
  • Dots and patterns
  • Yellow designs
  • Red dots
  • More leaves

There is no right or wrong design. Make it your Kalasha!

Step 6: Display Your Kalasha

Your Kalasha is ready! 🎉

Place your artwork somewhere special.

You could display it near your festival decorations, on your study table or beside your other artwork.

Take a moment to look at each part:

💧 Water – reminds us of life
🌿 Mango leaves – remind us of growth and freshness
🥥 Coconut – is considered auspicious
🏺 The pot – can represent abundance

💡 Which part of your Kalasha did you enjoy making the most?🏺 The pot?🌿 The leaves?
🥥 The coconut?🌸 The decorations?

Show Your Kalasha!

You have made your own Kalasha and learned about a special tradition at the same time.

Tell someone in your family one new thing you learned about the Kalasha.

Then find a special place to display your beautiful creation! 🏺🌿💛
