Flying kites is one of the most joyful Independence Day traditions in India – especially in Delhi, where the sky fills with colourful kites every August 15th. Let’s design your very own tricolour kite!
What You’ll Need
- A sheet of paper (A4 or larger works well)
- Orange, white, and green crayons, paint, or paper
- String
- A pencil for sketching first (optional)
- Two thin sticks or straws, if you’d like to make a real flyable kite
Steps
Step 1: Draw a diamond shape on your paper.
Step 2: Colour it tricolour – orange on top, white in the middle, green at the bottom, just like the Indian flag.

Step 3: Add a small circle in the white middle section, like the Ashoka Chakra on the real flag. Try to add a few little lines around it, like spokes on a wheel.
Step 4: Add a tail. Cut a long thin strip of paper and glue on a few small paper triangles or bows for decoration.
Step 5: Attach a string to the bottom point, and you’re ready to fly it – or hang it up proudly!

💡 The circle on India’s flag is called the Ashoka Chakra, and it has 24 spokes. Can you count to 24 while you colour yours in?

Did You Know?
- Kite flying on Independence Day is especially popular in Delhi, where the sky fills with hundreds of kites on August 15th.
- India’s flag can only be made from khadi, a special handwoven cotton cloth – though your kite can be made from anything you like!
- The three colours of the Indian flag each mean something: orange stands for courage, white for peace and truth, and green for growth and life.
