Mahalaya is a special time when many families prepare to welcome Maa Durga and get ready for Durga Puja.
Lotus flowers are often seen in Indian prayers and festival decorations. So, why not make your own beautiful lotus?
This is a simple activity that children can do at home with a parent or grandparent.
What You’ll Need
- White paper
- Pencil
- Crayons or colour pencils
- Child-safe scissors
- Glue
- The printable lotus template

Step 1: Draw or Print Your Lotus
Start with the lotus template.
If you are drawing your own lotus, make large petals so there is plenty of space to colour.

Step 2: Colour Your Lotus
Now comes the fun part!
You can colour your lotus pink, red, purple, yellow or any colour you like.
There is no right or wrong colour. Make your lotus bright and beautiful!

Step 3: Cut Out the Lotus
Ask an adult to help if you need scissors.
Carefully cut around the outside of your coloured lotus.

Step 4: Make Your Lotus Special
You can leave your lotus flat, or gently fold the petals upward to make it look more like a real flower.
Add it to your Mahalaya or Durga Puja decoration.

Step 5: Display Your Lotus
Place your finished lotus near your family’s festival decorations.
You can also make several lotus flowers in different colours and create a little flower display.
